Airline Careers

  1. Flight Attendants

Flight attendant hiring reached record levels in all four quarters of 2014 and in the first quarter of 2015. We expect this increase in flight attendant employment to continue through the end of 2015 however, competition for these jobs will be intense.

Recently, Delta received over 40,000 applications for 1,500 flight attendant openings, US Airways received 20,000 applications for 1,000 positions and Southwest received 10,000 applications for 750 vacancies posted on their website (in just two hours). After a long dry spell, United recently announced a large push to hire flight attendants due to a major European and Pacific route expansion in 2015.

2. Pilot-

What Is the Job Description of an Airline Pilot?

Overview
Airline pilots have a glamorous job, piloting large aircraft loaded with passengers all around the world. It takes a lot of training just to get licensed to fly these aircraft, let alone get hired by a major airline. Airlines have good and bad times and pilots are frequently laid off. Once a pilot builds some seniority and stability, the financial rewards can be great. Pilots have a tremendous amount of responsibility and must make critical decisions in seconds, as the US Airways crash on the Hudson River illustrates.
Job Description
An airline pilot's job description is to safely fly an airliner, but a pilot does much more than just fly. A typical day may start with the pilot using computer skills to check weather and flight plans. The plane must be pre-flighted and all aircraft logs reviewed. When ready, the pilot will oversee the push-back and then taxi to the runaway. While flying, in addition to monitoring aircraft systems, the pilot must communicate with the FAA and the company. Pilots may work long hours and strange shifts, often being away from home for several days.
Education
Having a college degree is important when applying for positions. Although not strictly required, airlines like American Airlines prefer a college degree or equivalent.(See Reference 1) Since many pilots are former military officers, they will all have college degrees. Without a degree, your application may stay buried below more qualified applicants. The degree does not have to be an aviation related field of study. Many pilots have degrees in fields ranging from law to engineering.(See Reference 2)
Training
Civilian pilots must go through rigorous flight training before they are finally rated for airliners. To fly large aircraft, a pilot must have an Airline Transport Pilot rating, or ATP ticket. In addition to having achieved all the lower ratings, there is also a requirement for total flying time and for time as Pilot-in-Command. Airlines favor former military pilots because of the quality training they receive. (See Resource 2) Once hired, pilots will receive extensive training for the aircraft they will fly and frequent recurrent training for the life of their career.
Salary
The pay a pilot receives is based on many variables. Seniority, type of aircraft flown and whether the pilot is a Captain or First Officer all affect the pay level. The hours that a pilot may fly is regulated by the FAA. Most pilots will fly between 75 to 80 hours a month. Starting out, a 1-year seniority pilot flying regional small narrow-body aircraft can expect a range from $21 to $41 per hour. The same pilot flying narrow-body aircraft can expect anywhere from $30 to $75 per hour. The highest paying position will be piloting wide-body aircraft. The 1-year seniority pilot will earn from $30 to $75 per hour. But after 10-years seniority, this pilot can expect $99 to $235 per hour.(See Reference 3)
Career Advancement Opportunities
Flying wide-body aircraft on over-seas routes is the pinnacle for airline pilots. Because of the flying time restraints mandated by the FAA, an over-seas pilot can reach his maximum flying time relatively quick, leaving him with more time off in that month.(See Reference 2) There are other jobs besides being a line pilot. There are pilots that conduct flight-testing after major maintenance. Some pilots conduct recurrent training and checkouts. Other pilots may choose to go into management, supervising pilot operations.

3. CSA- Customer Service Agents

Working as a customer service agent for an airline comes with some unique benefits, such as free air travel, but it also can prove a stressful job since you must deal with anxious passengers and tight schedules on a daily basis. Whether you are working on getting those planes out on time at the gate or dealing with customers at the ticket counter, there are some essential duties that you likely will perform at some point in your career
Passenger Check-In
Customer service agents who work at airport ticket counters are usually the first airline representative that passengers make contact with when arriving at the airport. In this role, you greet customers as you check them in, which entails verifying their identification and printing boarding passes. Many passengers will have luggage with them, and it will be up to you to identify which pieces need to be checked in, which can be taken aboard the plane and which will require an additional payment because of weight or because the passenger has exceeded the number of bags allowed by the airline. You might need to lift heavy luggage.
Facilitate Boarding and Deplaning
Your airline might assign you to work the gates inside the airport. In the gate area, you have a direct impact on whether the plane pulls back at its scheduled time. Boarding passengers in an orderly, but expeditious, fashion is your main duty. Doing this, however, means you will need to deal with customer questions and requests pretty quickly. This might include reassigning seats, processing first-class upgrade standby lists for the airline's loyalty program members and even selling some last-minute upgrades to customers who decide they want to sit in a premium cabin. As customers board, you will scan or verify boarding passes and take one last look at passengers’ carry-on bags to insure they are not too big for the overhead bins. When flights land, you will help deplaning passengers with questions about connecting flights or rebook them on new ones when they miss their scheduled connection. For agents who work at smaller airports, their duties often include attaching and detaching movable jetways to plane doors.
Customer Problems
As a customer service agent, it is almost a guarantee that you will hear customer complaints and problems – and it is up to you to resolve them. You might have a passenger who missed a connecting flight and needs new accommodations immediately, or you might need to issue meal vouchers to passengers of a flight that has been canceled at the last minute. Despite the stress you may be under, you must always maintain a professional and courteous attitude.
Agent Requirements
The major U.S. airlines tend to require their agents be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED, and have a valid driver’s license. And since you will have access to secure areas of the airport, you will need to pass an extensive background check mandated by the federal government. The background check will include verification of past employment, residences and criminal history, among other things. Other common requirements include the ability to lift at least 70 pounds, a willingness to work holidays, weekends and nights. In some cases, prior customer service experience will be necessary. Speaking more than one language, while not required, often is a plus.
